By Dr Idris Ahmed
Following the shenanigans and the preposterous delays surrounding the ministerial screening of Rotimi Amaechi at the Senate, we at CUPS feel obliged to shed more light on the matter. As always, our covenant with God and fellow Nigerians is to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, no matter whose ox is gored.
The Integrity Group, which claims to be a grassroots anti-corruption civil society organisation based in Rivers state alleged that Rotimi Amaechi has a case of grandeur theft to answer for. In their petition letter addressed to his Excellency, President Muhamamdu Buhari, on 31/7/2015, they alleged that Amaechi is guilty of corruption, criminal breach of trust, unlawful enrichment, and wanton conversion of Rivers state financial resources for personal use to the tune of N70 billion. They alleged that the offences were committed between 10/2007 and 28/5/2015. They sent the same petition letter to the EFCC on 28/7/2015.
While The Integrity Group's petition to the Presidency and EFCC are being investigated, three PDP senators from Rivers state wrote another petition to the Senate Ethics Committee, demanding the disqualification of Rotimi Amaechi as a ministerial nominee, on the grounds of the allegations made by the Integrity Group in their petitions. The allegations against Amaechi are summarised below:
1. Fraudulent sale of state power project for N60,480,000,000 and conversion of the proceeds for personal use.
2. Unlawful payment of N4,633,440,000 to Clinoriv Specialist Hospitals and Leisure Ltd, and fraudulent conversion of the money for personal use.
3. Unlawful enrichment of Messrs Collect (Nig) Ltd with Rivers state funds to the tune of N1,550,895,698.
We at CUPS do not take it lightly the allegations of financial impropriety labeled against anyone, including this one against Rotimi Amaechi. Regardless of his performance as Rivers state governor, and subsequent performance as APC director of campaign, if found guilty, we believe that Amaechi, like anybody else found corrupt, must be made to bear the full arms of the law.
The corruption case against Rotimi Amaechi must have been looked into both by the Presidency and the EFCC. It is inconceivable that his Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari, who came to power purely based on his integrity and credentials as the most incorruptible Nigerian politician of all times, would want to risk everything and cover up for Rotimi Amaechi, because of political expediency. To cover up for Rotmi's alleged fraud will spell doom to President Buhari's political career. We at CUPS refuse to believe that his Excellency has compromised his priceless principles over this matter.
Recent investigation showed that the so called Integrity Group is actually a non-existent organisation whether online or offline. Nobody could trace their office, website or Facebook page. Further investigation also revealed that their supposed Publicity Director, Mr. Livingstone Wechie, is actually an imposter. It is on record the the DSS and other relevant security organisations have cleared Rotimi Amaechi. It is perhaps for these and other reasons that both the Presidency and the EFCC never took the Integrity Group's petitions serious.
It is unfortunate that Nigerian politics can get so dirty that people are willing to risk long prison sentences just to destroy the political career of their enemies. We at CUPS have received so many phone calls from Nigerians purporting to have evidence of financial impropriety against Rotimi Amaechi. However, 3 months down the line, we have not received a shred of evidence.
Fellow Nigerians, we are happy to publish any credible evidence against Rotimi Amaechi sent us. Until such evidence arrives at our desk, our position remains the same as that of his Excellency, President Muhamamdu Buhari. We support the ministerial nomination of Rotimi Amaechi.
Finally, for the avoidance of doubt and for the clearing of his good name, we urge both the Presidency and the EFCC to reveal the outcome of their investigations against Rotimi Amaechi. Nigeria will be a better place if transparency and accountability is made to become the norm.
May God save Nigeria and Nigerians. Amen.
Dr. Idris Ahmed.
