Niger State Government says, despite the huge challenges of resources, it was still favorably disposed to overhauling the State Fire Service Department to make it functional and service-oriented to the populace.
Governor Abubakar Sani Bello, who gave this indication when he received, on a courtesy call, the Comptroller General of Fire Service at Government House, Minna, described the virtual decay of the service unacceptable.
He disclosed that, although the state government may not be able to raise the standard of the department to a globally acceptable one due its lean financial resources, it would ensure that every local government area in the state has fully-equipped and functional fire department.
The Governor regretted that the department has suffered years of neglect owing to lack of political will and complete ignorance of the importance of fire service in the prevention of fire and other emergency or disaster management.
Governor Abubakar Sani Bello also lamented the absence of fire safety measures in virtually all public places especially markets and government offices.
He said, although fire disaster was not a situation anybody would pray for, it was paramount for the state government to provide adequate fire safety measures as a precaution against any eventuality.
Earlier, the Comptroller General of Fire Service, Mr. Joseph Garba Anebi said they were in the state for the 7th National Council on Fire and Insurance as well as Conference of all Directors of Fire Service in the country.
Mr. Garba Anebi disclosed that all states in the country are developing rapidly without corresponding fire and other safety measures in place adding that the ratio of one Fire Officer to 22,322 persons as against one Fire Officer to 1,000 persons was unacceptable by all standards.
The Comptroller General noted that the ratio was completely not in tandem with the country’s development strength stressing that investors to the country may not be comfortable it there was no fire safety measures in place to protect their investments.
He revealed that, at present, only three functional fire engines were available in the entire state and pleaded with Governor Bello to assist the State Fire Service Department in other to work effectively and efficiently too.

BUHARI: TURNING APPOINTMENTS INTO DISAPPOINTMENTS

By Jaafar Jaafar Ponder over this Hausa proverb: “sawun keke ba’a gane gabanka”, which roughly translates to “a bicycle’s contact patch does not tell where it comes from or where it heads to”, and see how it aptly describes Nigeria’s president, Muhammadu Buhari. Bearing in mind the current realities in our polity, how would you, in your wildest dream, think the Secretary to the Government of the Federation will come from the North? The very North that has a President, a Senate President, a Speaker, a Head of Service, a Chief of Staff, a Chief Justice, and what not? While Mr. President is likened to the proverbial “sawun keke”, the pigmentation of his appointments may be likened to “birgimar hankaka”, literally meaning the wallow of a pied crow. When a pied crow wallows, the Hausa say, you will see both the white patch on its gullet and the black plumage that covers most of the bird’s body. In the appointment of the GMD of NNPC, President Buhari showed Nigeria...
