By Abdullahi Yusuf
The Biu main market which is the biggest market in southern Borno has been under lock and key for almost one month now. The market which is the main place that the people within Biu and it surrounding get their essential needs has been shutdown for security reasons according to the military. It has therefore subjected the people to unquantified hardships, as commercial activities has been crippled as a result of the shutdown. The worst hit are ordinary poor people whose live depends on their daily petty trade that they normally do to survive in the market.
Am therefore calling on those responsible for closing down the market to please for the sake of these poor people whose life's depends on the market do something. While we all appreciate the efforts of our gallant military on their efforts to end the insurgency in our beloved state, but closing down the only market in the zone for a month is uncalled for. There should other strategy to control the situation. As it is now, the information am getting indicate that some criminal elements are braking some shops inside the market and steal whatever they see.
The state govt under the leadership of H E Gov Kashim Shettima should as a matter of urgency intervene for the immediate reopening of the market. Those who have suffered loses should be assisted as well. Our representatives at the national assembly should as well intervene and find a lasting solutions to this problem. Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume, and Hon Muktari Betara Aliyu should take not pls. Other well meaning individuals should as well render their assistance to our people. This is an urgent matter, and it should be treated as such.

BUHARI: TURNING APPOINTMENTS INTO DISAPPOINTMENTS

By Jaafar Jaafar Ponder over this Hausa proverb: “sawun keke ba’a gane gabanka”, which roughly translates to “a bicycle’s contact patch does not tell where it comes from or where it heads to”, and see how it aptly describes Nigeria’s president, Muhammadu Buhari. Bearing in mind the current realities in our polity, how would you, in your wildest dream, think the Secretary to the Government of the Federation will come from the North? The very North that has a President, a Senate President, a Speaker, a Head of Service, a Chief of Staff, a Chief Justice, and what not? While Mr. President is likened to the proverbial “sawun keke”, the pigmentation of his appointments may be likened to “birgimar hankaka”, literally meaning the wallow of a pied crow. When a pied crow wallows, the Hausa say, you will see both the white patch on its gullet and the black plumage that covers most of the bird’s body. In the appointment of the GMD of NNPC, President Buhari showed Nigeria...
