
According to Halilu Ibrahim Dantiye, Director General, Media and Communications to the Exececutive Governor of Kano state, the state government is to establish a mechanic village where automobiles will be repaired, spare parts fabricated and youths trained on mechatronics, panel beating, welding and essentials of mechanical/electrical engineering, among other things.
The state governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Gandje announced this during the send forth of 100 youths to Peugeot Automobile Nigeria Learning Center, Kaduna for a one year intensive Automobile Technicians course and presentation of cash assistance to 18 nationwide football league clubs in the state.
Governor Ganduje explained that the move is part of his administration’s commitment to build capacities of the youth for self reliance and to galvanize them to drive socio – economic development.
“Because of our high population, we have a large number of vehicles, yet a small number of mechanics. Besides, in this day and age, vehicles repairs are above road side mechanics, because of the sophistication of vehicles. We must, therefore, train our youth to fill in the gap in this direction”, the governor maintained.
He said mechanics in Kano must transit from trial and error approach to vehicle repairs to professionalism in the fast changing society, which is characterized by developments in ICT and engineering.
Governor Ganduje therefore, charged the youths benefitting from the automobile course to remain dedicated, pointing out that on completion of the training, they will be issued with City and Guilds certificates and be given driving licenses by the government.
Turning to the football clubs, the governor announced that each of them was given a donation of N500, 000 assuring that the government would continue to motivate them to incubate talented players for Kano Pillars FC. He promised that the Kano Sports Institute would be equipped and made functional to become a model in Nigeria.
The state Commissioner for Information, Youths Sports and Culture, Malam Muhammad Garba expressed that the training programme for the youth is the first of its kind in Kano, taking into cognizance the duration of the course, the skills to be acquired and the reputation of the training institution.
He stated that a Ministerial committee to monitor their progress has been constituted, while government would continue to support amateur and professional football clubs to enable them outshine their peers in the country.
In her remarks, the Director – General, PAN Learning Center, Kaduna, Mrs. Elizabeth O. Mordi promised that besides the training on automobile repairs, maintenance and allied areas, the trainees would also undergo free ICT and defensive driving courses.
Representative of the Emir of Kano, Mohammad Sanusi II, Alhaji Ado Kurawa, Dangoribar Kano, commended the state government for initiating and sponsoring the programme, as part of its responsibility for youths empowerment in the state.
Speaking separately on behalf of the trainees and the benefitting football clubs, Yahaya Sulaiman Gwale and Salisu Ibrahim promised to make good use of their talents for the overall good of the state.
