Recently, I decided I would put an end to my various political write ups directed at the Ondo state governor and his government. Since the former President Goodluck Jonathan is gone, and gone for good or otherwise, shouldn't I rest a bit? "Y yu wan ki yursev ontop PMB mata sev". Some friends called me to thread softly. My family told me to "take a chill pill". Few colleagues wondered why dissipating such energy on people that do NOT care if I exist! Lo and behold, I took their advice. I listened to them. Afterall, they are the only people I have on planet earth!
But two events under 24hours made me have a rethink. One is for "Iroko". Dr. Rahman Olusegun Mimiko is now a "Fellow, National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria" for his outstanding performance in the Ondo Health Sector! I remember my accountant friends called themselves "Fellow" back then in school. They were so passionate about it. Then I knew it was highly prestigious to be a Fellow. To be a Fellow in a reputable organisation too, one must have risen through the ranks from ordinary member to an associate. So "Iroko" is not an exception. He has meandered through the ranks too. Of truth, my governor really needs these awards just like 2012. Elections are around the corner now. But did the college ask him if he has paid the workers and staff of this health sector? Did they ask if truly this sector is working the way his media cronies are painting it? They should just remind him to complete the Oba-Ile Airport road "ongoing" for the past six years!
Secondly, and the more painful of this, is the consistent determination of the Bench to beliitle, denigrate, discourage and frustrate the corruption campaign of PMB and his team against people that have milked our country dry and punctured the bag of our commonwealth. Gone are the days when "the Judiciary is the last hope of a common man". Be careless now and you are a goner! Before now, I had this great and undiluted regard for our Judges. I followed my lawyer-to-be friends to the Akure High Courts in 2010 to witness a case. Few minutes into the proceedings, the court clerk discreetly sent me a message. Remove the necklace dangling on you. The Judge doesn't like jewelries on young boys. I did that under few seconds. I didn't want to be docked. I didn't tell my father I would spend the night at the Olokuta Prisons! That was the height of respect and regard I had for the Bench.
These past weeks, the courts have really shown their true colours. From banning EFCC prosecuting Amnesty fraudsters to preventing ICPC from carrying out their constitutional duties, the list is endless. Many Nigerians were hopeful Bukola Saraki would be docked this morning by the Code of Conduct Bureau for a 13-count charge. The courts are out again to do what they know how to do best. This time around, the court is summoning the CCB, EFCC and the rest to appear before it. This is outrageous. Though the action is legal, it is not right. Nigerians fought tooth and nail to bring sanity and sanctity back to our polity, the Judges shouldn't be the impediment and bottlenecks to our "Canaanland"!
On May 29th, 2015 when President Muhammadu Buhari made that "notorious" statement, a friend said he would need to "belong to the courts". Someone should tell the Bench to be careful or we judge them!!
